Top Tips To Stop Procrastinating-Part 1

In this series I will cover super easy and fast methods I have come across to crush the awful merry go round of procrastinating that lets face it we all go through. Even these people donning the covers of magazines face procrastination. After all we are human! It is a ever present evergreen issue for a reason.

Top Tips To Stop Procrastinating-Part 1

Break it down into a tini tiny au derves. The smallest action conceivable. An example is if you really want to write a novel. Thinking about the amount of pages or the hundreds of hours needed to be put in will seem way too hard and will put most of from even starting. If however you say “I will write two crappy pages per day’ these small successes are enough to motivate us to get into the habit. A key is to be hyper specific and have a timeline, saying I will commit to doing two crappy pages per day, weekdays only, for the next 90 days. You may not use them, but at least you are doing the do.

BJ Fogg has completed a lot of research for Stanford University and he has talked about doing less than you are capable of doing. When something is too big, intimidating or too much of a pain in the ass. Lets use a simple example of flossing our teeth, something no one really loves doing. If you say o.k I’m going to floss just my front two teeth, three little gaps, that’s all you are going to do. Then also make it as easy as possible, use a water pick or disposable flossing gadgets so you need to tourniquet your fingers.

Another example is the prolific music producer Rick Ruben when he is working with music artists he will give them tiny homework assignments. If he has a stuck artist he will say can you get me one word or one line that you might like for this song we are working on by tomorrow, is that possible. Neil Strauss an award winning writer for The New York Times talks about writers block and setting standards way to high. Do not say I am going to write 2000 words. You will create performance anxiety. Go back to the two crappy pages per day.

Another example could be with exercise. People set goals especially around New Years saying I’m going to smash it, I will do an hour a day, 6 days per week. If you are going from doing no exercise. Start by committing to 5-10mins 3 days per week.

With all these examples setting these macro goals will get us showing up, and often once started we naturally want to do more.

I hope you have enjoyed this first installment of Top Tips To Stop Procrastinating?

I would love to know your thoughts in the comments. Have you ever had similar experiences?

Bum Steers-The Founder Movie

The Founder Movie

Showing you how Macca’s was founded, this movie was thoroughly enjoyable from my point of view. One of the two brothers who actually founded the first McDonald’s restaurant states in the film “There is a wolf in the hen house…& we let him in” That wolf goes on to claim he was The Founder & takes all the glory for the formula the two brothers worked so hard to perfect. In the defence of the wolf, Ray Kroc (played by Michael Keaton) he did work his ass off to elevate the chain from coast to coast with over 1600 restaurants founded and managed to overcome hurdles such as major financial struggles and unexpected costs such as running the huge walk in fridges to hold ice-cream and milk for the milkshakes.  Going from a door to door milkshake mixer salesman to lay the foundations of one of the worlds biggest corporations is inspiring, in my opinion. Ultimately Ray Kroc pulls the rug from under the real founders and even opens a Macca’s directly opposite the first ever, and makes the brothers take their own surname off the original.

Although at times I felt for the brothers I could not help but root for Ray Kroc to overcome adversity and grow the hell out of his dream. If there is one word to come out of this film it is ‘Persistence.’ In the film, The Founder, Ray is listening to a fictional recording called “Power of the Positive” by a fictional author named Dr. Clarence Floyd Nelson. It was created for the film specifically and there are no other references to it in other popular media. It states something along the lines of; Nothing in the world can replace the power of persistence. Talent wont… Genius wont… education wont, the world is full of educated fools. Persistence and determination alone are all powerful. That human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind. Other reviews were far from glowing but I really enjoyed this movie I will say 4 out of 5.

How To Have A Good Day Everyday

How To Have A Good Day Everyday

I am going to cover some strategies that you can easily implement and show you How To Have A Good Day Everyday.

Our subconscious filters what we take in. Our brain picks up whatever is top of mind. You spill your coffee and you’re focused on being clumsy then it is possible you will dwell on this for longer than usual. Or If you are about to see someone you find annoying you are more likely to miss anything positive or kind they are saying.

You may have heard of the term selective awareness. If you have ever bought a car in the past you may have started noticing that model of car everywhere on the road. Or may have come out of a movie with your partner and you are discussing it afterwards and you realise you both have a totally different take on the movie.

A tip is to pick a time of day when you are able to have a think you do not need long. 10 seconds or so to think “o.k. what really matters? The Neurochemistry of reward rather than failure.

There is various research on priming thoughts and how they are connected to happiness. These can be referred to as stepping stones. Think of a time when you have worn say a suit & you have knocked it out of the park. When you have put that suit on again you feel ready to take on more.

Implementation intentions make a difference to us getting things done. Instead of saying “Oh I have to exercise today…sigh” say instead “after work is when I will put on my gym clothes on.” Science has shown a 300% increase in the chances of completing these tasks when you state when you will be implementing that action.

Science has shown we can only hold three or four things in our conscious rather than the 7 previously believed. Keep this in mind when stressing over any tasks at the one time.

Prisoners are less likely to get parole if the judge has not had a break & the judge feeling overloaded.

People need to learn to say “No”more often. The trick is to start with the thing we are saying yes to. An example would be “I’m really excited by all the work I have putting into my book and it’s great to talk to you today. Due to being so busy with my book I will not be able to say yes. It has been so great seeing you and hearing what you have been up to!” So start with warmth, say “no” and end with warmth. Rather than saying “no” and then explaining yourself. When doing the latter people go into a defensive mode- fight, flight or freeze. In this mode it is hard for them to hear any of your explanation as to why you are giving them a no.
Another important tip is to not assume someone is a bad person if they are having a bad day. “Assume good person, bad circumstances” and practice empathy.
If you’re having a bad day practice generosity. This is a win win! It makes you feel good & the other person feel good and you will feel more connected to humanity. These tips were from a book I read by Caroline Webb you can get more information from her latest book How To Have A Good Day Everyday. Or visit carolineweb.co You can download a free discussion paper or a free chapter.

Make Your Kid A Money Genius (Even If You’re…

Make Your Kid A Money Genius (Even If You’re Not)

I am a firm believer that as a society we do not put enough emphasis on teaching our children about money. Towards the end of my high school I read Robert Kiyosaki’s book Rich Dad Poor Dad which for me then other than doing fake trading on the stock market in mathematics at school was the first insight into understanding how money can work. I recently listened to an interview by the author Beth Kobliner of “Make Your Kid A Money Genius (Even If You’re Not)” She talked about some basic tips that we can pass on to our children. I enjoyed her explanations in lamens terms and I wanted to share them with you.

What I found interesting was children as young as the age of 3 already have a basic understanding around money habits. By this age they can understand value, exchange, and how to make choices about money.

Everyone has some financial baggage and as parents it is important to go through basic financial principles and money basics with our children. From Age 3 start talking about “I have a job that helps us pay for food and petrol etc. We don’t need to talk about how much we make specifically or how much super we have,  or how Uncle Joe is tight and Aunty Joanne will just spend money on anything!

It is important to not lie to kids, if you are in a shop, do not say I have no money when they are demanding something, to then stop on the way home and buy petrol. Explain this is not what we came into the shop to buy today.

Frequently these days kids see us wiping cards more so than using cash. Use cash intentionally at times. Explain credit cards are like a loan, getting free money with interest. Explain it can be like paying $800 for a TV but paying the minimum repayments you’ll end up paying $1,100 for that product.

Unfortunately unlike when we were children savings accounts that existed are no longer around. As a child I had a savings passbook which I would go into the bank with my savings and the Teller would actually stamp your book although this isn’t available these days recommended even putting $100 a year into savings for the child. Another recommendation Beth Kobliner suggested to help them understand trading is to look at exchange traded funds or ETS which can be trading with as little as $100. This way they are still getting knowledge around trading actually using money. I remember when we did dummy trading in Maths I didn’t care when the Boardshorts Company I chose to invest in tanked as there was no ‘real’ financial interest.

Another part of the interview that I found interesting was around kids getting an allowance. There are over 2 dozen studies published on allowances and the consensus was it does not change their behavior. It was recommended that kids are not paid for chores that would be seen to be contributing around the house as a member of the family. However paying an allowance for jobs that would be considered going above and beyond for something that you would outsource perhaps to someone not in the family. An example was sorting large amounts of photos into files etc.

Be consistent with your children and money. If you tell them they will pay for that concert and then have them pulling heartstrings when they not saved saying “but all the other kids are going”. On that same note be realistic don’t expect them to buy presents for all their friends birthdays, buy phone credit and save for the concert.

If they loan money from you while you are out as a family and say they will pay you back, make them stay true to their word.

As they’re slightly older it is considered good to explain how insurance protects them from huge unexpected costs. At the same time go over how extended warranties on small products like appliances need to be weighed up whether they will actually benefit. Perhaps the product may be replaced before the extended warranty comes into play.

Before they enter the workforce explaining how some companies offer to match super contributions is like getting money for free and should be taken seriously. Research showed that male teens get talked to about investing & saving and girls get teased about buying make-up or clothes. The author recommended treating both sexes equally when it comes to educating on saving and money habits.
